Transition Tempo and Shaft Mass

Two golfers with identical swing speeds can need very different shaft weights — because swing speed and transition tempo are not the same measurement.

Swing speed gets measured at one point: the moment of impact. Transition tempo describes something different — how abruptly or gradually a golfer changes direction from backswing to downswing, and how quickly load builds into the shaft during that change of direction. Two players can arrive at the same impact speed while getting there through very different transitions, and shaft mass responds to the transition, not the final number.

Fast, Abrupt Transitions

A player whose hands and body change direction sharply tends to load a shaft quickly and can generally handle, and often benefits from, more mass. A too-light shaft in this kind of transition tends to whip ahead of the body, producing an early release and inconsistent face control at impact. Adding weight here frequently improves both timing and dispersion, even without changing flex.

Smooth, Gradual Transitions

A player whose transition builds more gradually loads the shaft over a longer window and typically plays better with less mass. Overweighting a shaft for this kind of tempo can leave the club lagging behind the body's rotation, producing a late, held-off release and a loss of clubhead speed at impact.

How We Measure It

We record transition on camera across a spread of shaft weights at a constant flex, watching for the point where the club begins visibly loading relative to the start of the downswing. The weight class that produces the most repeatable loading point — not the highest peak speed on a single swing — is usually the one that plays most consistently on the course.

The goal isn't the heaviest shaft you can still generate speed with. It's the weight that makes your transition repeat the same way, swing after swing.

Why This Gets Missed

Standard fitting carts are built to optimize launch numbers on a handful of swings, which rewards whichever shaft produces the best single result — not necessarily the one that repeats best over eighteen holes. Tempo consistency takes longer to observe than a launch monitor readout, which is part of why it's rarely measured directly.

If your ball flight feels unpredictable despite solid swing-speed numbers, the mismatch may not be in your mechanics at all — it may be a shaft weight that doesn't match how your transition actually moves.
