Flex letters and torque ratings get most of the attention on a spec sheet, but raw shaft mass — measured in grams, on a bare shaft — is what actually decides how your transition and release feel timed. Here's how we read it.
The Number Manufacturers Rarely Print Loudly
Shaft weight is usually listed in small type on a spec sheet, buried under flex and torque, even though it's the figure that most directly affects how much effort your transition has to spend moving the club. A driver shaft can run anywhere from the low 40-gram range up past 80 grams while carrying the exact same flex letter.
Golfers with a fast, aggressive transition often load a heavier shaft more consistently, while golfers with a smoother, later-loading transition can lose feel and timing in a shaft that's too heavy for their tempo — regardless of what the flex sticker says.
Weight, Flex, and Torque Are Three Separate Questions
Weight
How much mass your hands and transition have to accelerate. Governs timing and effort more than any other single shaft variable.
Flex
How much a shaft bends under load. Related to weight but not interchangeable with it — two shafts of the same flex can weigh far apart.
Torque
How much a shaft twists under load. Independent of both weight and flex, and best evaluated only after weight and flex are already dialed in.
