Iron sets live or die on consistency from club to club, and shaft weight progression — not just swingweight — is one of the biggest levers we have to keep every iron feeling like it belongs to the same family.
Two Different Ways to Build "Consistent"
Swingweight matching is a useful shorthand, but it can hide a set where actual shaft mass jumps around from club to club, especially in mixed-brand or hand-me-down sets where shafts were sourced from different production runs. We weigh every shaft in the set bare before building anything, then chart a weight step rate — usually a few grams per club — that stays constant from your longest iron to your shortest.
That step rate is what actually keeps transition timing consistent across the set, independent of whatever the swingweight scale happens to read.
Weight, Lie, and Gapping Together
Weight Step Rate
We target a consistent gram-per-club increase from long iron to short iron, correcting for any club that breaks the pattern.
Dynamic Lie Angle
Lie angle is checked at impact, not just at address, since posture and swing plane can shift the effective lie you're actually playing with.
Length & Gapping
Length adjustments are made after weight class is locked in, so carry-distance gapping between clubs reflects your real swing, not a generic chart.
Shaft Material
Steel and graphite options are compared at matched weight classes, so material choice doesn't accidentally reintroduce a weight inconsistency you were trying to fix.
Head Weight
Head weight is adjusted club to club when needed to keep total mass on the ladder, rather than leaving every head at a stock weight and hoping the shaft alone compensates.
Grip Consistency
Grip weight and size are held consistent across the set so weight-ladder targets aren't undermined by mismatched grips at the top of each club.
